Happy Birthday!

Nothing says "you're my dearest friend" than posting an unflattering picture from past adventures! I'm sure you attacked the driftwood challenge with the same intensity you're showing contemplating whatever it is you're contemplating on these Swedish steps.

Have a great day E -- and many more years of crafting bantering. I need someone to finish my sentences!

Crafty Bastards and more!

Happy First Day of October! Now can someone tell me exactly where September went????

Unlike Fiber Fest (Patti, your description made me smell wet wool), today was the perfect day for Crafy Bastards--75 and sunny. And it was packed! I'm glad I went early. There were about 100 vendors, about 10-15 of which were really high quality, though many ideas to be had all around. Oddly, there were two booths that were inspired by squid (one was really cute: cleodee.etsy.com). A lot of buttons (like campaign buttons, not clothing buttons), which I hadn't realized were quite so big. Very cool bags with funky construction by pistol (www.pistolstitched.com--love the name!). My big purchase was a bag:

It's all handsewn, fabric and leather. The flap tucks into the black horizontal strap. I'm not sure you can see, but the circly patterns are my color blue. I think this artist was on Daily Candy (www.miyasol.com). I also got a little shirt for Kayla from www.1girl1boy.com:

So I'll go again next year, knowing that there's lots of stuff to be sifted through.

I've made some jewellery the past couple weeks. Here's a necklace I made for my mom's birthday, of tiger's eye, alabaster & silver, with a 3d silver flower pendant.

This one is for my friend Deb's birthday (red tiger's eye, olive & bronze pearls, brown goldstone, silver & a pearl clasp). Let's just talk about how hard it is to scale things down for someone smaller!
I had worked on this one in Santa Fe but was never quite happy with it, so I redid it and made a bracelet to match.
Now here's the one that I want advice on. It's square pearls, silver beads, and jade-like rose things dangling from it. I'm not sure this is the right clasp for this idea, though. The clasp has garnets in it. Thoughts?
Now I'm going to go rip out what I did yesterday on the Challenge. I'm having trouble with the translation from head to product.

I Swear...

I swear I made this before I looked at the pictures of the other ribbon necklaces. I will admit that I was inspired by another necklace I saw on the web which was intriquingly referred to as 'the whip'. The problem is, it's very hard to find beads that the ribbon will fit thru so I ended up hand sewing most of the beads to the ribbon. Tedious, at best! Is it very dorky looking?

So, are we all good with the 14th as a final finish date for our 1st Crafters Challenge?

An Exciting New Contest!

In an effort to keep us all busy-or crazy-I am offering a crafters challenge. Shortly you will receive in the mail a small piece of drift wood that I found while walking along the shore of Lake Erie on a beautiful day!

Let your imaginations soar and see what you can make with this. There are no rules for the contest so you can do anything you want to the wood. We can set a date for showing of our completed projects. Let me know how long you need. 2 weeks? 3 weeks? and then we can post pictures. If you think this is just to crazy and that I've gone over the edge, you're right!

Here are pictures of the necklace I finished. They are both made from old stuff I found at flea makets. The gold one is a shoe buckle and the pewter one is from Renningers (the last time we went together). It was a necklace. I am really liking putting together odd combinations. Are they to odd?

Playing catch-up

I thought I'd catch you all up on what I've been doing lately. I got tired of not being able to find long skirts and took matters into my own hands. The black and melon ones are linen. The green one is from silk that Rob brought back from China. And, K, you were with me when I bought the bamboo stuff to make a dress, again years ago. Hmmm...perhaps there's hope of using up my stash after all.

I started the turquoise necklace in Santa Fe, but I though it needed something else so I added another strand. The silver necklace and bracelet were inspired by some I saw in Sundance.

I also spent this morning at the Sully Quilt Festival in Chantilly, Va.

It was really quite nice--fabric, some crafts, quilts for sale. I got some nice fabric and a ton of ideas. You should think about coming for it next year. And K, you'll get a double header, as it's at the home of Robert E. Lee's uncle, Richard Bland Lee.

Rain, rain go away!!

I thought some new pictures might lift our spirits! What an absolutely dismal way to end the summer.

Anyhow, the red necklace is ruby jade and very sparkly. The clasp is cool because it's a teardrop shaped loop with a bird toggle. I only explain that because the picture doesn't show it up very well.

The other necklace is all glass beads. I thought it looked very Fallish but I am not sure It will go with anything since the colors are a little weird. It weighs a ton!

The bag was fun to make. It's four pieces made seperately. The pieces are lined and have pockets and then the 4 pieces are hand sewn together. It's alot of Hand sewing and then you have to make 8 tiny buttonholes. Truth is, I like the origami just as well and it is far less intense.

Well, that's all I've got for now. Keep dry and be thinking about that show we want to do and our next weekend together. There is a show in EA at the end of Sept. called the FiberFest. Last year was it's 1st year. A friend who did the show last year and is doing it again this year said it was a pretty good show(juried) and the entrance fee is not to high. I will check it out for sure. Only problem ~it is an outdoor show which could be tricky in late Sept.

I have 3 new magazines so I am off to read them and hopefully not fall asleep before I get inspired.

Keep dry! Patti

you guessed it ...

... I made more jewelry! This is a going away gift for a researcher (who has been gone almost a month now, but who's counting). She had asked for my help suggesting jewelry for a bridesmaid dress she has to wear in the fall -- it's brown, and I thought these lovely purple-ish pearls would go nicely. The old buckle/clasp combo were a windfall in my junk box. Gotta hope she hasn't already bought something....

The other necklace is an idea I got from In Style magazine, of all things -- velvet ribbon and old buttons. Easy peasy! I wore it today with an erica-blue jersey wrap dress, but got no comments. Can you believe it?

What do you think?

The Amazing Origami Bag!

Yes, you heard it right. The amazing origami bag is made from one, that's right, I said one square of lined fabric, It is then magically folded and you end up with a bag that has an middle pouch with a pocket on either side.

Just to prove that this is not a hoax, three of you have been randomly selected to receive one of these unique bags. These bags are being sent to you FREE of charge, satisfaction guaranteed or you may return for a full refund. ( Wait! Didn't I just say they were free? Ok, so change that to no obligation.)

Use the bag for 30 days and I can guarantee it will change your life forever. Wow, I'm really getting carried away. This bag can be used to carry all those little knitting items that end up in the bottom of your big knitting bag, like tape measures and stitch holders, etc. I am sure it would function as a travel jewelry pouch so all those hand crafted necklaces are safely transported. Of course, and maybe most important it could carry meds or better yet, your secret stash of .........chocolate. This bag is so diverse it could even be a little purse for those crazy nights that we go clubbing.

I will be anxious to hear what other uses you come up with for the "amazing origami bag". So look for yours in the mail. It should be arriving in a day or two.

A posting from Quincy!

This came in the form of a plea to post, without witty comment. So I'll let the pictures speak for themselves -- great quilts Amy! Adorable dog! I'm SURE Lucy was helpful making these, right? :)

long time no blog

thought it was time i shared some of the quilty things that i've made lately. i think lucy makes a really nice quilt model. what do you girls think???

I finally did something!

Aside from spending 100s of dollars on equipment and supplies, of course. Check out my new necklaces. E, you may recognize the one scarf. Mom, you may recognize the other!

To make the bottom necklace, I cut apart a doily that Hendi had given me from her grandmother -- so I think that one is going back to her. I was inspired by the necklace that we saw at Homefrocks, even though I can't really remember what it looked like (though I'm sure it was expensive!)

I think next time I'll use less wire on the scarf necklaces, and maybe screw around with some wide bore beads instead. What do you all think?

Quilts-to-go

I saw this idea for roll up blankets in one magazine or another--to take to the beach or to Wolftrap, or whatever. I thought I could do a cooler version. I cheated a bit on the backing--I used the pre-quilted stuff.

This one's Rob's:
This one's mine. The poem is ee cumming's maggie and milly and molly and may.

SCRIBBLE

As promised, here are some pictures of the scribble lace scarf/wrap I am working on. The concept is basically to use a thin yarn(thread) and a thick yarn. I am using a crochet cotton thread and a ribbon yarn. The tricky thing is to keep your yarn on the needles since the crochet cotton seems to want to jump right off.

I have dropped stitches several times and had to use a crochet hook to work them all the way back up. Not a project for a windy day-like when I went to the lake. Despite it being ornery it is an easy pattern, works along quickly and is very soft and drapey.

The necklace is really prettier in real life because the colors didn't show up to great. I had a bit of struggle with the clasp and it's still not quite right but I will be on the look for for a better solution.
I am going to go thru my fabric stash today and see if I have the "exact right thing" to try out a small bag pattern that I have had for years but just saw a new idea for. I'll let you know how that works.

Hope to see some new stuff from you guys soon. If only you didn't have to do that work thing!! ;)

So enough already!

SO... At least for now, I am very much done with the moebius thing. I am tired of wool yarn and felting. I hope when the cool weather comes I will get a second wind because there are some more really neat patterns in the book that I would like to tackle. Every time DH looks at the finished bowl he laughs and shakes his head. He really thinks it is ridiculous. I think it's cool especially now that all my yet to be used yarn is piled in it. Only problem is, I'm not sure where to put it. It did turned out to be rather large. It is also a little fuzzy for my tastes but I'm going to see if I get use to it before I attempt to shave it.
I made this lap blanket and small pillow for a friend who had knee surgery today. She really seemed to like it. She said the color purple is healing. I figure it will come in handy especially as she will be going to a rehab place for 10-14 days .

I had the most fun making the tag. I'm not entirely sure she understood my attempt at humor but she was impressed that I made it.

Once again I am searching for a new project. What next?

Santa Fe and beyond

Whew! This is the first chance I've had to download pics from the 1st Annual Craftacular Trip and Retreat.
For our loyal readers (I know they're out there somewhere), here is a photo of all that we accomplished whilst in Santa Fe, all our trekking around notwithstanding.

And out of a great need for new posts, here are two things I worked on today even though they're not finished (I have no idea why this is being underlined). You'll note the absence of the silk bustle skirt. I have no idea what to do with that and have thrown it in a corner.

On a more successful note. The first quilt front is the result of doodling I did while being bombarded with 6.9 billion bar graphs via PowerPoint at one of the conferences that I was just at.

These second group of pieces are just from some fabric I've had laying around. Though, as you can see, I now have a small problem, as I've run out of the magenta fabric that I was using to frame the dragonflies. I suspect I'll probably just channel those women of Gee's Bend and use something all together random for that last piece. After that I'm not sure what I'm going to do.

Next up: playing around with the great rubber stamps that I got on our trip.
